1. Scope

This application note is intended for application developers building an IoT solution on Amazon Sidewalk for North America, Europe, or both.

A device’s operating region determines its sub-GHz radio behaviour: the frequency band, the spreading factor and channel plan, the transmit power limit, and the channel-access rules the device must observe. A gateway detects its own region. On an end device the application supplies the region, both to configure the radio and to report it during setup (§4.2).

This note describes how the region value reaches each class of device, what the application developer is responsible for in each case, and how a device behaves when a region has not yet been set or is not supported. Only the sub-GHz layers are region-specific. The application, security, and Bluetooth Low Energy layers do not vary by region.

§2.2 lists the countries each region supports. Whether a particular product is offered in a given country is decided per product.
