3 Gateways

A gateway establishes its own operating region. The gateway host determines the region from the gateway’s IP-based location and applies it to the sub-GHz radio. The application developer cannot configure or override it: no integration step selects the region on a gateway, and no application code needs to supply one.

Because the region is determined by the gateway rather than provided by the application, the integration concern for a gateway is confirmation rather than configuration: confirm that your target market is a supported country (§2.2). A gateway that cannot establish a valid region, such as one in a country outside the supported regions, does not bring up its sub-GHz radio, so there is no sub-GHz coverage there.

Auto-detection is bounded by the firmware: a gateway can only operate in a region its firmware supports. Gateways are built with REGION_LITE, which supports North America and Europe.

A gateway operates on the radio parameters of the region it is in, so an end device can communicate only with gateways in the region it has been provisioned for. Because the gateway’s region comes from its network location and the end device’s region comes from the location given at setup, the two agree only if the end device is provisioned for the region where it is actually deployed (§4).
