Setting up the hardware development kit (HDK)

To easily prototype your Sidewalk-enabled device, first order a hardware development kit (HDK) from the vendor’s website. You can use an HDK from Nordic Semiconductor, Silicon Laboratories, or Texas Instruments. The following shows the supported HDKs for each vendor. To learn how to use the HDK and install the required tools and libraries, see the vendor documentation.

We recommend that you follow the chipset vendor documentation to install the software development tools that are required for programming the device. The vendor tools packaging and instructions can change often. For HDK questions and support, contact the HDK vendor.

The following shows how to set up the software and hardware development tools for your HDK.

Topics

Nordic Semiconductor

To prototype your application, follow the instructions from your chipset vendor to set up your development environment and create an Amazon Sidewalk prototype using their development tool kit.

Development resources
Set up and familiarize with the vendor’s development environment and tools.

Hardware development
To start developing Amazon Sidewalk-enabled devices, order the hardware development kit from Nordic Semiconductor. You can start with the Nordic nRF52840 DK development kit and the Semtech SX1262MB2CAS evaluation board.

Software Development
Download the software and required tools and applications, as described in the pre-requisites section. If you require any additional software dependencies to start building your application, access Development Resources to download them.

  1. Login or register on the Nordic Semiconductor website, and access and download the Amazon Sidewalk SDK from the chipset vendor’s development resource.

  2. Download the tools that are required for programming the device.

For more information, see the Nordic Semiconductor documentation.

Silicon Laboratories

To prototype your application, follow the instructions from your chipset vendor to set up development environment and create an Amazon Sidewalk prototype using their development toolkit.

Development resources
Set up and familiarize with the vendor’s development environment and tools. For more information, see Amazon Sidewalk development tool kit.

Hardware development
To start developing Amazon Sidewalk-enabled devices, order the hardware development kit from Silicon Laboratories. You can start with the Silabs Pro Kit For Sidewalk development kit

Software Development
Download the software and required tools and applications, as described in the pre-requisites section. If you require any additional software dependencies to start building your application, access Development Resources to download them.

  1. To download all board and protocol support SDKs for Amazon Sidewalk, download Simplicity Studio version 5 and login to the IDE.

  2. To program all the EFR parts, download the Simplicity Commander tool, and then go to the Tools pane of the Simplicity Studio IDE after downloading it.

For more information, see the Silicon Laboratories documentation.

Texas Instruments

To prototype your application, follow the instructions from your chipset vendor to set up the development environment and create an Amazon Sidewalk prototype using their development toolkit.

Development resources
Set up and familiarize with the vendor’s development environment and tools. For more information, see Amazon Sidewalk development toolkit.

Hardware development
To start developing Amazon Sidewalk-enabled devices, order the hardware development kit from Texas Instruments. You can start with the LP-CC1352P7 LaunchPad development kit for SimpleLink multi-band wireless MCU development kit.

Software Development
Download the software and required tools and applications, as described in the pre-requisites section. If you require any additional software dependencies to start building your application, access Development Resources to download them.

  1. Go to the Texas Instruments website and choose Login/Register, to access and download the Amazon Sidewalk SDK from the chipset vendor’s development resource.

  2. Download the UniFlash tool that’s required for programming the device.

For more information, see the Texas Instruments documentation.
